What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercises to improve core strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. It is a natural compliment to Physical Therapy as it focuses on precision and control of movements, proper body mechanics as well as the importance of the breath.

While Pilates training focuses on core strength, it trains the body as an integrated whole. Exercises are performed with attention paid to the precision of the exercises versus the quantity. It focuses on strengthening and elongating muscles, which when they are balanced, good posture is easily attained, allowing for ideal alignment and movement of the joints. Muscles are worked in lengthened positions to develop tone, not bulk. As Joseph Pilates said, “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

Who can benefit from Pilates?

Pilates can be done at any age or fitness level. It can be done with or without special equipment. There are different levels of exercises depending on fitness level and injuries. Your instructor will be able to modify exercises if necessary for injuries or conditions. The goal of Pilates is to improve overall health, by creating balance and awareness.

Classes are small to provide more individual attention. Focus is paid to pain-free movements. Pain causes the stabilizing muscles to become inhibited, so the saying “No pain, no gain”, is irrelevant. There needs to be a balance between the small stabilizing muscles and the big muscles that move you. Pilates is meant to bring balance and awareness; tight muscles are lengthened and weak muscles are strengthened.

In 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference.
In 20 sessions, you’ll see the difference.
In 30 sessions, you’ll have a whole new body.
